Billboard article about Darren's solo
Edited by Jonathan Cohen / June 01, 2001, 3:25 PM
Savage Garden's Hayes Working On Solo Album
Savage Garden's Darren Hayes has begun work on a solo album in a San Francisco studio. He says that he and his bandmate, Daniel Jones, are not broken up, despite rumors to the contrary. "We're on a hiatus," he tells Billboard. "Daniel and I finished an 87-city tour and have sold 20 million albums in three or four years. It was a big run for us."
Hayes says his solo album, which is slated to come out on Columbia during the first quarter of 2002, affords him a chance "to grow, to learn ... I've written 40 songs for the record. I've written with Rick Nowels and Walter Afanasieff, as well as a new writer called Greg Beick," he reports. "It's just an amazing team of people that's pushed me and challenged me. And I've been able to take [songs] to places that I've never really been before in terms of Savage Garden. This music has a slightly more R&B slant."
As previously reported, Savage Garden's "I Knew I Loved You" was named song of the year at ASCAP's annual Pop Awards ceremony, held last week in Los Angeles. "It healed my broken heart. It still makes me smile when I sing it," Hayes admits.

A new interview with Darren

Nothing Growing in Savage Garden This Season
Savage Garden won Song of the Year honors for its "I knew I Loved You" as last weeks ASCAP Pop Music Awards. But don't expect to hear more from the multiplatinum-selling duo-- as a duo-- anytime soon. Singer Darren Hayes tells us that after 10 years of partnering with Daniel Jones, he's cutting a solo album. He and Hayes haven't broken up, but they have no plans to work together again, either. Savage Garden took a hiatus after its last world tour. Hayes went to Hawaii, grew his hair out to its natural blond, spent time with his family, and, he tells us, got some new perspective: "I did things I was afraid of. I was afraid to stand on my head, so I practiced yoga. I was afraid to be underwater, so I got my scuba certificate. Just what seemed like insignificant things, but they built up my character, and they made me think about other avenues of my life." He starts cutting his solo record this week and says he has 35 songs from which to choose, including some in an R&B vein, and some electronics--experiments he wouldn't feel free to try on a Savage Garden disc. He expects to put out the first single in October, "album soon to follow." Jones, he adds, is "my most supportive fan." And what about Savage Garden? "I don't know," Hayes says. "We have to wait and see. You know, this whole ride for us was so unexpected. We were 18 when we started. I'm 29 today. We really needed time to grow."
